Case Study
Establishing a Data Architecture Service

Following a major digital transformation and investment in new information technology systems, we were commissioned by our client to produce a Data Governance Operating Model, covering data quality principles, organisational structure, roles and responsibilities, business processes, technology and data products.

The client (circa 3k employees) had a small Data Stewardship team which was detached from the operational function, so we recommended a Data Governance Office combining those resources with Data Architecture and Data Management. The role of the Data Governance Office would be to establish a structure that supports business data stewards, providing the necessary agency-wide policies and tools to enable them to manage, maintain and exploit information for the organisation.

We used a combination of industry standards data management frameworks such as Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBoK) and adapt them to the needs of the business. We provided our client with:

  • Defined data management roles and responsibilities
  • Dependencies on existing information management, policy, technology and customer facing teams
  • Proposed Organisational structure
  • Data Governance Business Process and Product Catalogue
  • Current and target technology functions
